Brewer’s Breaks Ground

December was a pivotal month for Beaufort’s first brewpub, Brewer’s Brewing Company, LLC. Ground broke, and concrete footings were poured for the 3340 square foot brewpub, located in the new Jean Ribaut Square. The new commercial center is being developed by 303 Associates. Josh D. Brewer, owner and Head Brewer, said the 7-barrel (Bbl), 85-seat brewpub is scheduled to open during the fall of 2007.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a brewpub?
A brewpub is a restaurant-brewery that sells 25% or more of its beer on site through the restaurant, bar, and by “to go” containers. The beer processed on-site is referred to as a “craft” brewed beer.

What is a brewery?
A brewery simply produces and packages beer for resale. It is commonly in a warehouse type structure, and does not serve food or beer on site. It is often referred to as a “production facility.”

How does Craft Beer differ from traditional beer?
Craft beer differs from traditional beer in several ways. The ingredients that make up a craft beer are of a higher quality (fresh hops and yeast verses cheap corn and additives.) Batches, or the amount of craft beer produced at one time, is smaller than a traditional beer produced by a large national company. Craft beers have more flavor, and more diversity than traditional beers.

How many beers will Brewer’s have on tap?
Brewer’s Brewing Company, LLC intends to have six “staple” beers (beers which are always offered) and one seasonal beer (specialty beers such as Waterfest Ale) on tap at all times. Brewer’s will also make beer for your special occasion.

Will Brewer’s sell kegs?
No. Under current South Carolina law, kegs cannot be sold from brewpubs. Brewer’s Brewing Company, LLC will, however, sell “growlers.” Growlers are sealed glass containers, filled with a half gallon of any beer the guest chooses. They are purchased for consumptions off-premises.
